Jointing of Copper Pipework for Refrigeration Systems - Specification & Procedures for Manual Torch Brazing and Brazer Assessment – Issue 6 v1.1 – Feb 2021 NEW VERSION
Recognising the importance of brazed joints in maintaining the effective and efficient operation of refrigeration and air conditioning systems the BRA Commercial Contractors Section has developed this simple brazing procedure specification and approval for jointing copper pipework for refrigeration systems.
The specification also incorporates a practical means of assessing an individual’s competence to braze joints for refrigeration & air conditioning pipe work in accordance with national standards used by the industry and relevant legislation. This revision has incorporated high strength copper alloy pipe in recognition of is adoption on R744 systems and is also applicable to A2L refrigerants.
The BRA hopes that this specification will continue to be the accepted industry standard and, as such, we commend it to you. This specification has been endorsed by the Technical Committee of the Institute of Refrigeration.
This document has been written in accordance with BS EN 14276-1:2020 Pressure equipment for refrigerating systems and heat pumps (harmonised to PED 2014/68/EU), Annex B - Specification and approval of brazing procedures, brazers and brazing operators, as a suitable procedure to assess and approve individuals carrying out the jointing of copper pipework in accordance with Sound Engineering Practice (SEP) and the Category 1 modules of the Pressure Equipment Directive (2014/68/EU) / Pressure Equipment Regulations 1999 (SI 1999/2001).
Guidance on Conformity with Safety and Product Standards – GN24 - 11 April 2012

IOR Guidance note on BS EN378:2016 – Summary of Changes
This Guidance Note explains the role of the BS EN378 “Refrigerating systems and heat pumps - Safety and environmental requirements” safety standard and highlights the most significant changes introduced since the last version was published in 2008.
BS EN378 was revised in 2016 to bring it into alignment with ISO5149 the international safety standard. This included introduction of an additional flammability class, 2L, to the method of charge calculation based on refrigerant classification and the addition of two new alternative methods of charge calculation. Most of this is detailed in Part 1 of the Standard. In Part 2 flowcharts used for determination of protective device requirements have changed. Part 3 includes changes to the requirements for machinery rooms. Changes to Part 4 are less significant. Several informative annexes have been introduced to cover stress corrosion cracking, leak simulation, commissioning and ignition sources (Part 2) and special provisions for handling ammonia vapour during maintenance or decommissioning (Part 4, within the existing Annex C). Service of Hydrocarbon Refrigerant Equipment in a Retail Environment – 28 Feb 2012
In order to support the increasing use of hydrocarbon refrigerants in retail refrigeration and air conditioning equipment the British Refrigeration Association issued this Guidance. It summarises best practice for the service and maintenance of retail systems which use hydrocarbon refrigerants to ensure engineers work safely. Download
Code of Practice – Design and manufacture of Refrigerated Cabinets running on Hydrocarbon Refrigerants – 27 Jan 2012
In order to support the increasing use of hydrocarbon refrigerants in integral commercial refrigerated cabinets the British Refrigeration Association Cabinet and Cold Store Section has commissioned this Code of Practice. It clarifies the regulations, standards and practices which apply to the leak simulation testing and subsequent design of systems which use hydrocarbon refrigerants. This will provide the basis for a consistent approach to be adopted by all manufacturers, end users and specifiers when using these refrigerants. Download
BRA Guide for Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS) Issue – 1 December 2011
The Method Statements give a brief description of the task that is to be assessed. The Risk Assessments describe the type of hazards that can occur, how to control them (and thereby reduce the associated risks) and what to do in the event of an accident or imminent danger occurring. Available ONLY to FETA members as a free download.
SkillFridge Leaflet – December 2010
SkillFRIDGE has been designed to promote standards and skills across the refrigeration and air conditioning industry, developing competence into excellence. Competitors will undertake a series of practical tests based on real-life work which will demonstrate their abilities and highlight their outstanding skills in their industry. Download
F Gas re-training and you... Published October 2010
This leaflet produced by SummitSkills answers some basic questions about the re-training and assessment required by the F Gas Regulations, and is aimed at both operatives and employers.
Some of the questions answered include:
What are the benefits to employers?
What can be expected from the re-training and assessment process?
Which level of F Gas qualification is the right one?
Which qualification should I take?
